What does ‘Codeseira’ mean?
A Codeseira is a place where there are ‘codesos’. And what are ‘codesos’? They are characteristic shrubs of this region.
The ladders are short, with a woody stem, rounded leaves and very showy yellow flowers that are represented in our logo. If you are lucky enough to visit us in spring, you will be able to see large expanses of yellow flowers contrasting with the dark green of our mountains.
In addition to being precious, different medicinal properties are attributed to them, and they have great symbolic value, since they were and are part of some festivals and rituals in different parts of Galicia.
For example, they are used to decorate houses or cars in ‘Os Maios’, which celebrate the arrival of spring. This rite sought to attract good crops and avoid the evil eye. And it is also one of the 7 St. John’s herbs.

Melide and ‘El Camino’

The tradition of welcoming pilgrims has always been part of the history of Melide. Here the French route that comes from Roncesvalles and the Camino Primitivo converge, which comes from Oviedo and was already traveled in the 9th century by King Alfonso II.
Many pilgrims finish their penultimate stage here. Are you also doing ‘El Camino’ and are you going to sleep in Melide? We are delighted to welcome you!
Here you will find a lot of historical heritage and places related to ‘El Camino’. Before getting here, you can visit the Pilgrims’ Forest, linked to the Order of Santiago. There is the Cross of wishes. If you still have time, pick up a stone during the Camino to make a wish to the Apostle and leave it here next to the Cross so that it may come true.
Another point to visit before reaching Melide is ‘O Cabazo de Leboreiro’, a particular precursor construction of the typical Galician granary, which is worth seeing.
Already in Melide, you can visit the Church of Santa María de Melide, (Romanesque from the 12th century), the Museo da Terra de Melide, the Town Hall building (18th century), the Chapel of San Antonio and the Church of the Convent of the Sancti Spiritus, with a baroque altarpiece and interesting history.
To top off your visit, try almendrado, our delicious typical dessert.
